Bipasha is the second of three daughters in her family. She was born in New Delhi. Later her family moved to Kolkata. She spent her childhood in Kolkata. She wanted to become a doctor, but ended up studying accountancy after class twelfth and got masters degree.
As a child she was deemed ugly because of her dark skin. She said acting and modelling was not her passion and she came to the industry only by an accident.
At the age of 17 she participated in Godrej super model contest which she won thus set feet on glamorous world of modelling. This Calcutta based commerce graduate model came into limelight when she won Ford Supermodels Contest. In the same contest, she has been crowned by the Tulips Miss Super Vivacious.
She was flown to New York by Ford people. Bipasha was spotted by the world famous photographer, Steven Mizhel, and featured in Vogue magazine. Besides appearing in several advertisements of big companies she also cat walked for many leading Indian designers. She worked as a model before she was signed for her first film.
Although many Indian models curved from modeling to acting, Bipasha has been one of the most successful model turned into an actress. Bipasha now has various awards and honours to her name.
In 2001; Bipasha Basu turned herself from modeling to films. Her first movie- Ajnabee, did well at the box office. Bipasha soon signed for various other movies. She attracted consideration with her roles in Raaz (2002) and Jism (2003). Raaz, though not a very successful movie brought her into publicity and many offers too. Her role in Jism brought her in public eyes and afterwards she was marketed as sex symbol.
Bipasha Basu has done various movies like Aankhen, Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, Chor Machaye Shor, Zameen, Ishq Hai Tumse, Rudraksh, Rakht, Hera Pheri, Corporate & Race.
Bipasha Basu was the female lead in Corporate, she received much compliments for her performance. Race is her latest release with Yash Raj Films, which was a massive hit overseas and in India.
In Vikram Bhatt's Aetbaar, Bipasha shows the maturity of an actress. She proves that besides playing sexual roles on screen she is also capable of handling complex roles.
In 2001, Bipasha Basu won Filmfare Award for Best Debut in Ajnabee. She was also nominated for Best actress award in Raaz and Best Villain award in Jism.
She has been dating movie star and model John Abraham for some time now, and recently rumors of their engagement was in the air.
